Deerfield's Health Center

A team of professionals provides Deerfield students with comprehensive health care and counseling services at the Health Center, an accredited hospital facility. The medical services are staffed by a full time physician and by registered nurses on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. With a 15-bed inpatient facility and a busy outpatient clinic, the Health Center is well equipped to care for the majority of the illnesses and injuries common to the Academy's students. The closest hospital is the Franklin Medical Center, a 100-bed community hospital with a medical staff of approximately 150 physicians, located five miles away in the town of Greenfield.

The counseling services are located in the basement of the Health Center. Individual counseling is provided by the four counselors on staff. Common themes in counseling include issues relating to social adjustment, emotional growth and boarding school life. In special cases, the Coordinator of Counseling seeks the assistance of outside professionals.  In addition, the Health Center is supported regularly by other groups on and off campus:

  • Two outside specialists come to the Health Center on a regular basis to see Deerfield students: a Gynecological Nurse Practitioner and a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist.
  • Two full time athletic trainers with offices are located in the gym, work closely with medical staff in providing appropriate rehabilitative care for musculoskeletal injuries as well as developing strategies for preventing athletic injuries.
  • The medical staff also works in close consultation with the school nutritionist who is also Director of the Dining Hall.

Walk-in services by the nursing staff and emergency services are provided 24 hours per day.  Doctor's appointments can be scheduled Monday-Friday 8 am-5: 30 pm.
