October 9, 2009  |  Chris Waddell '87 takes on one of the most grueling challenges of his life and becomes the first paraplegic to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. For seven arduous days Chris ascended the mountain as no one had ever done before, on a custom-made four-wheel mountain bike, using only his arms.

In September 2002, for outstanding achievement and service, Chris was presented with Deerfield's Heritage Award for his contributions to athletics as a paralympian. The citation on the award reads: "Chris, you have inspired not only the disabled world, but also all those who come in contact with you."
