October 6, 2009  |  Ambassador Ralph Earle II, Class of 1946 was presented with the 2009 Heritage Award at today's School Meeting. Mr. Earle, whose career has focused on national security and nuclear disarmament, is recognized as the primary architect of the United States' nuclear disarmament strategy. He served under six presidents, and was involved in many major arms-control treaties. Under President Jimmy Carter, Mr. Earle served as chairman of the U.S. Delegation for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and was responsible for the U.S. negotiating strategy that led to the signing of the SALT II Treaty with the Soviet Union in 1971.

The Heritage Award was initiated in 1984 to recognize a Deerfield alumnus whose professional and personal achievements represent a special contribution to the betterment of society. In short, someone whose life exemplifies the academy's motto, "Be Worthy of Your Heritage." In addition to honoring the recipient, it also makes the current Deerfield student body aware of the scope and substance of the accomplishments and contributions of the academy's alumni.

Deerfield is proud to number Ambassador Earle among its alumni, and is honored to present him with the Heritage Award.
