Deerfield Alumni Gather in Los Angeles

May 24, 2006 | On Thursday night, May 18, I joined a reputable group of early 90s alumni (Martina Love Harris '92, Trevor Mullen’92 and Annabelle Richardson ’94) to revive the long overdue “Deerfield in Los Angeles Cocktail Night” that has lain dormant for the past few seasons.
At the new southern inspired lounge, "Memphis in Hollywood", young and young(ish) alumni from the classes of 1985 – 2001 got together to show off two things we have learned Deerfield alumni to be exceptional at: cocktails and “war stories”.
It was sort of like that random walk-through meal where, based on staggering arrivals and departures, you end up sitting with a bunch of random people….but actually have a good time with them anyway. (That did happen once I at D.A., I think)
True to form, about 85% of the meet-and-greet treaded on the misty-eyed/nostalgic/scandalous/DC-able school social history. And in the area of school news, we all discovered how fast particular information about what’s going on now travels.
Even though a lot of us hadn’t gotten together in two years or so, we had all heard the same breaking stories, curious rumors, and received the same emails. Thankfully we had Amanda Harris ’00 on hand direct from 01342 to confirm/deny/spin and snap some photos….and most importantly, pick up the food tab.
Besides the heavily represented ’91-’94, a good showing in quality and quantity came from’98 and a we also had a side dish of ’00-’01 in the mix too. I was expecting about 10 people, but about 40 showed…and wouldn’t leave! At 10 pm, an hour after our “curfew” at Memphis, people were still wandering in to our party and jealous of our nametags. Overall, a killer turnout on a Thursday night with short notice.
We’re going to do more purely social events over the coming months, so I hope that any new to L.A. or visiting alumni will come say "what’s up".
I can’t say that anyone left regretting having made the trip…at least not anyone that said it to my face. (Trevor? Martina? Annabelle?)
