Questions to Ask on College Visits
  1.        What are the sizes of the various classes, especially for freshmen and sophomores?  Are freshmen and sophomores put into large classes without much access to top faculty?

     

    2.   What are the best places for students to work (study) at the college?  Are space and carrels available in the library?  For freshmen?  What resources are there for students who seek tutoring?  Is there a writing center?

     

    3.    What are the special features of the library?  Are laboratories and computers available to an adequate extent?  Any special facilities?

     

    4.     In the classroom are the undergraduates customarily addressed by their professors as Mr. or Ms., or by their first names?  How formal or informal is this school?  Do students have social contact with faculty members?  Who does academic advising?

     

    5.     How are the dormitories set up?  Do most students live in dorms all four years?  Are they co-educational by floor, by building, or not at all?  Are there quiet study hours?  Are those hours enforced?   Are there upper-class student resident advisers?  What sort of regular access do students have to adults in the community?

     

    6.     What is the composition of the student body?  Is it diverse in ways that suggest you will be exposed to a variety of backgrounds and experience? 

     

    7.     How is campus security assured?  What are the available medical facilities?  Are they open twenty-four hours a day?

     

    8.     What are the most popular majors?  What are the strongest majors?  How would you describe the intellectual atmosphere? Academic pressure?

     

    9.     What, if any, are common student complaints?

     

    10.   What are the cultural resources of the school and the community at large?

     

    11.   How good are the extracurricular programs and social life of the college?  What about intramural athletics?

     

    12.   What happens on weekends?

     

    13.   What is the attrition rate in the freshman and sophomore years?  If it is high, what is the college’s explanation for it?  If very low, what explanation?

     

    14.   What are the advantages of this school’s size? Disadvantages?  What percentage of the students take a term or year abroad?

     

    15.   What are the advantages of this school’s location?  Near a city? Do many students take advantage of city life?

     

    16.   What meal plans are available?  Are students happy with the dining services?

     

    17.   What percentage of students are in fraternities or sororities?  What role does “Greek” life play on campus?

     

    18.   What can you tell me about drug/alcohol use on your campus?  Incidence of date rape?  What controls are in place?

     

    19.   What makes this school distinctive from others I’ve visited?
