Mr. Boyden was the Deerfield Academy Headmaster from 1902 – 1968. When he arrived at the Academy there were only 14 students. By the time he left, Deerfield had established itself as one of the most prestigious New England secondary schools.
Mr. Boyden developed the school's motto, "Be worthy of your heritage," but he also advised students to: "look to the hills," "be mobile," and “finish up strong.”
While Mr. Boyden’s aphorisms suggest that a community of learners always reach further, stay flexible, and accept challenges, it is ultimately up to Deerfield students to interpret and value these oral traditions at Deerfield.
